The land reform programme revolutionary in many respects has radically changed land issuance processes in Nyema village.
Land contests have arisen over the nature land is being allocated in Nyema village, which is under the Umzingwane Rural District administration. The land in contestation was reserved as pastoral grazing land for livestock, rather than growing crops, and human settlement. In latest developments Ward 2 constituency within the district is allocating the grazing land to its residents. The development has incited Ward 5 constituency administration to also resettle its residents on the grazing pastures. This development has posed threats on grazing land management and administration in Nyema.
During a meeting held in Nyema last week, it came clear that Owen Sibanda who works under the Zanu PF offices was not the one settling people on these grazing pastures; but was behind the pegging of land for the settlers.
Speaking to one of the settlers Hloniphani Magutshwa, she said, “The land was being given to the needy neither Zanu Pf, nor any other political party”. She went on to reveal that most of her neighbours in the new settlement were women from Ward 2 constituency.
Thembelani Dube from Ward 5 stated that, “even though they were allocating land to locals for free, land was being sold to outsiders.” “If you take a close look portions of land allocated to locals is countable, meaning that most of the stands have been sold to non residents of Ward 2 and 5.
Mqalisi Moyo, Zanu Pf youth chairperson commented saying; what the administration was doing was wrong and out of order, because they were now entering another ward, Ward 20 boundaries. “It was not going to be an issue if they were settling their people within their boundary” he said.
Mqalisi Moyo went on to state that there is a number of Zanu Pf youths based in Ward 20 who needed land for settlement.
The leaders of Ward 20 had to meet Ward 5 leaders over the land issue. Comments from the Ward Councillor were fruitless
