Zion Christian Church (Z.C.C- Mbungo) youths today braved the rainy weather and embarked on a massive clean-up campaign at Copacabana and Market Square Bus Termini in Harare’s Central Business District.
The campaign, which is dubbed “Z.C.C Youth Clean Campaign” started in the morning and lasted for more than four hours.
The rain- drenched youths could be seen sweeping, picking rain- soaked litter at the rubbish infested termini and their surrounding areas.
Z.C.C Youth Vice Chairperson, Mr Jasper Mangwana, explained they have been conducting clean up campaigns in cities and towns across the country.
“We have been carrying out clean- up campaigns in areas like Bulawayo, Gweru, Chinhoyi, Kwekwe, Chegutu, Karoi and Marondera and today we are in Harare,” he said.
“We want to live in a clean environment so that we don’t contract diseases such as cholera. As such, we are doing this clean- up campaign for our families, communities, country and the world at large,” he added.
Mangwana also revealed they are involved in various activities such as football and netball in their efforts to keep the youths occupied.
The ZCC youths were divided into two groups with one group covering Copacabana area while the other was in charge of Market Square.
Environmental Management Agency (EMA) Environmental Education and Publicity Officer Ms Batsirai Sibanda commended the successful clean-up campaign by Z.C.C youths adding that other churches should emulate Z.C.C.
“I would like to thank the Z.C.C youths for carrying out a successful clean-up campaign,” she said.
“EMA and city council are not the only ones responsible for a clean environment but every citizen is,” she added.
She also said plans are in place to engage all churches on how to manage litter at their gatherings.
“This is because we want to teach them the importance of separating litter at source,” she explained.
The cleaning exercise was punctuated by singing and dancing which left motorists and pedestrians in awe.At Market Square bus terminus, business was briefly brought to a halt as people jostled to catch a glimpse of some nimble- footed youths who were showcasing their dancing prowess.
The clean- up campaign was carried out ahead of the church’s massive conference which begins on February 2 to February 4 at the National Sports Stadium.
