A BULAWAYO woman died on Sunday morning after she was assaulted by a suspected thief who had stolen a carton of peanut butter from her shop in the city center.
Witnesses said the unidentified man elbowed Blessed Sibanda (34) on her chest before she fell on her head and died on the spot.
They said the after getting a tip off from others in the shop that there were thieves, Blessed stood to confront one of the men who had stolen her peanut butter.
The incident occurred at Golden Brooke market place at the corner of 5th Avenue and Fife Street
“The man denied the allegations and started walking away but when she tried to apprehend him, he tried resisting and hit her with his elbow on her chest and she fell on her head,” said Mildred Siziba.
The fracas happened in broad daylight in full view of passersby who were left dumbfounded after she was pronounced dead by medical officials who attended to her.
Mehluli Moyo, another witness said the suspect fled from the scene soon after the incident.
“It all happened fast, the thief fled soon after pushing her off and people were still focusing on try get Sibanda up. We called for an ambulance but she was already dead when the ambulance arrived,” said Moyo.
There were still crowds gathered around the shop when the Tenacity Post crew arrived at the scene but the body had been taken by the police. The shop was closed for the rest of the day.
Bulawayo Police Spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident which he said was under investigation.
He said: “I can confirm we are investigating a murder where a 34-year old woman was allegedly hit by a suspected using his elbow as he was running away with 12 by 300ml case of peanut butter. As he ran, the deceased gave him a chase that is when she was hit and collapsed. An ambulance was summoned but she was pronounced dead upon its arrival. Investigations are still under way,”
