Two major events that were set to be the biggest in Bulawayo for the month of April have been placed on ice as a proactive measure against the Corona virus.
The Zimbabwe International Trade Fair that was slated for the 21st to the 25th of April and the Independence Day celebrations have been shelved following a government directive to ban all public gathering and events.
This follows the national address by the President Cde Emmerson Mnangagwa at the state house in Harare in light of growing concerns about the global COVID 19 pandemic.
According to the ZITF company’s website, the decision to postpone the 2020 ZITF exhibition is a precautionary response to keeping with health authorities for social distancing and limiting mass gatherings.
In his national address the President Emmerson Mnangagwa said all national events such as the ZITF, independence celebrations and all sporting fixtures be postponed and resources for these events be channeled towards strengthening the prevention of corona and drought mitigation.
The President also assured the nation that preventive measures are being put in place to prevent the pandemic.
“More isolation and treatment places are being identified and equipped appropriately, government has fashioned hospitals and clinics with accessories and kits for screening and treatment’ he said.
Unnecessary travel has also been discouraged especially to high risk countries as a measure of preventing transmissions and spread.
“Major entry points will remain operational with screening and testing as recommended by the World Health Organisation,” he added.
He said travelers from high risk countries will be expected to postpone their travel arrangements to Zimbabwe for the next 30 days starting from the 20th of March 2020, saying the government is working within the guidelines of WHO in handling and treating foreign.
He urged businesses and establishments to equip themselves with screening stating that ” government premises must with immediate effect be equipped for screening procedures while businesses and other establishments are also encouraged to do the same to achieve a total and effective response to corona virus.”
The virus has impacted negatively on national economies, international and relation trades with companies such as ZITF already informing exhibitors, buyers and other stakeholders with information about the pandemic
